Programme Note
Commissioned by Tanglewood Music Center for the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, Iris and Butterfly was written for a small mixed chorus and string quartet. The text is composed with sounds of isolated syllables and Solfège that do not have any specific meanings. It was the end of a great summer for me as a composition fellow at Tanglewood. The mood of the music is lighthearted and a little sentimental towards the end of the piece.
The premiere was prepared by TFC’s Music Director John Oliver and conducted by composer Steven Mackey.
