Programme Note

Written for the Tanglewood Festival Chorus and its legendary director, John Oliver, Iris and Butterfly uses a text composed of isolated syllables and solfège names that do not have any specific meanings. It was at the end of a wonderful summer I spent as a composition fellow at Tanglewood, and this music somehow reflects that moment—playful and lighthearted, with a touch of sentimentality toward the end…

Do(DOH)
Re(RAY)
Mi(MEE)
Fa(FAH)
Sol(SOH)
La(LAH)
Si(SEE)
