Programme Note
“Joy” is a 7-minute thrill ride that celebrates the sheer joy and passion of musicians coming together and making music. Originally written for Morningside Music Bridge, Canada’s internationally recognized music program on the occasion of its 20th Anniversary, this string quintet version has been re-worked for the fabulous musicians of Sybarite 5 with support from the Cranbrook Music Guild. The piece is a fusion of musical styles, harmony, and timbre, mixing folky Chinese tunes with the edginess and lushness of the strings. It begins with a lyrical introduction, before bursting into a colorful and virtuosic rhapsody.
